My Work From Home Experiences Part 1
I just realized that this posting I started probably two weeks ago was never published. I had promised to tell everyone about my work from home experiences over the years. It turned out a lot longer than I expected so I am going to break it into a couple of postings.
When I was pregnant with my first son in 1999 there was not a ton of work from home jobs out there yet. I was determined to stay home with him but my husband was just recently out of college and not making much yet. I knew I was going to have to find something do to help out. I was blessed to run across something by accident before I had even begun my search for a work from home job. There was a local data entry company that a friend of mine told me about. They did mostly magazine subscriptions and had several drop off and pick up locations around town. So we would drive down at a certain time each day and pick up our work that had to be finished by the following day. It worked great while my son was little and I could do it during nap times. I did that for about a year and just as it seemed it was not going to work for me anymore, the more active my son was getting then I ran across something else. By the way, this data entry company is no longer in business or I would give you their information but there are amny similar companies now that scan their documents so you do not have to live locally. You can visit my list of data entry companies on the Work at Home Companies page.
Next, in 2001 I ran across an ad in my local newspaper for a call center job. They were only hiring locally at the time but all training and work was done from home. It paid well and I thought there must be a hitch. I did my research and found that the company, Alpine Access was a fairly new virtual call center company based out of Golden, CO which is right near my house. It made me feel good that it was a local company and I could not find anything negative about it so I signed up. At the time Alpine Access only had a couple of clients that were all based locally as well and was just getting started. Now they hire in many states and have several clients that are Fortune 500 companies. Alpine Access is a wonderful company to work for. Their training is phenomenal and the support is great. You take incoming calls from what ever client they have trained you on and assigned you to. Most are customer service based calls. You really get to know everyone there very well even though you never meet them. When I was first hired they were hiring mostly stay-at-home Moms and it was very, very flexible. You just scheduled yourself for the hours you wanted to work as long as you met a minimum requirement. It worked perfect for me because my husband's schedule he was gone some days all day and some days home all day until the evening. I worked when he was home to watch the baby and it worked out great. back then I was not familiar with all the other virtual call center companies out there but now comparing them Alpine Access is one of the best in my eyes. Alpine Access pays per hour regardless of how busy you are. Most other call center companies pay per minute that you are on the phone so if you end up with a slow shift you won't make much. I worked for Alpine Access for five years and by the end had two other additions to our family. Towards the end they had grown by leaps and bounds and had changed some. Their clients were bigger and more demanding and they needed to know shifts would be filled so the flexibility of the position slowly went down hill. They changed my program to a fixed shift schedule meaning you had to select a shift and commit to working it five days a week. This no longer worked with my husband's erratic work schedule to be home to watch the kids so I began my hunt for a new work-from-home job.
To be continued....
