Amazon, as you all know, is a leader in the online retail space in the United States. If you are an avid reader like me you will also be familiar with the fact that the Kindle is Amazon’s e-reader they sell. Kindle direct publishing is basically a way to publish a book, short story, set of articles, etc online and offer it as a download for those shopping online.

The benefits of self publishing using Amazon is that it is free to set up an account and it is a platform that millions of people are already using to purchase ebooks.

Who Can Get Published on the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing Program?

The short answer is anyone. Most people think of getting published online and selling ebooks as something for published authors or those trying to self-publish their own books but really anyone can do this. If you are an expert in a certain subject you can consolidate your knowledge into an ebook and sell it online. If you are a blogger you can consolidate a bunch of articles you have written on a topic and sell it online. Make your own recipes? Write them up and sell them online.

Your ebook does not need to be long, it can be as long as needed to cover the topic effectually. Just make sure to price it accordingly and make it clear how long the book is in the description so people know what they are buying.

 

How Do I Get Started?

The first stage is to come up with some ideas for a book and then do some research. If you are writing a fictional book or story then you obviously just need a story line clearly laid out in your head before starting. For an informative book you need to be sure you really have all the information needed in order to write something on the topic. You also need to research your ideas and make sure this niche does not already have a ton of competition in the kindle world. I don’t mean you need to come up with some brand new topic that has not been covered at all but it needs to be something people are actually searching for and something you can offer value on.

The next step is obviously writing your book. How much time this will take will depend on the length of your ebook, how much material you already have on the subject, and how much free time you have to write.

Once you have your ebook finished you need to have a good book cover that will appeal to your audience. If you are good at that type of stuff you can design one on sites like Canva or just hire someone on one of the freelancing sites like Fiver to do it for you for cheap. You also need to come with a title that clearly explains what your ebook is about or for a fictional book something catchy that will interest readers.

Once your ebook is written and you have a title and a cover you are ready to set up your Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing account. To earn with Amazon KDP, start by going to the website kdp.amazon.com. You can then either sign in using an Amazon personal account you already have and use that as well for your KDP account or you can create a new account for your business entity. You will need your name, address, back account info, and your SSN or tax ID number in order to continue setting up your account.

Once your account is set up you can start to earn with Amazon KDP. You will have access to the dashboard when you log in where you can add titles. The first step is usually to set up your author page with information about you and this is where all of your titles for sale will be listed.

Once your ebook is finished you will upload it using the Kindle ebook option and be sure to include your cover and set your price according to what type of ebook you have written.  Once everything is entered, your ebook will be online within 72 hours.

How Do I Earn With Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing?

You can price ebooks as low as $.99. How much commission you receive is based on your price. For ebooks priced from $2.99 and up receive a 70% commission, under $2.99 receive a 35% commission. The account itself is free though so you can upload as many ebooks as you have time to write.

One option that is offered when adding your book is to enroll in the KDP Select program. This means you are giving Amazon exclusive rights and will not sell your ebook anywhere else online. It also comes with some promotional tools to help your market your ebook once it is published. You can choose this and use the program for marketing or there are other ways you can market your book online as well.

Other options for marketing your ebook include Amazon’s book advertising program, using social media to market online, paid Facebook or Instagram ads, or even setting up your own website. If you are a blogger that already has a website and a social media following then you are ahead of the game.

It might all sound a bit overwhelming at first but if you love to write or are an expert in a subject it is a great way to earn money because there are no start up costs or investment besides your time.
